FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers to the questions clients abroad ask us most.

Can you handle my case in Mexico if I live abroad?
Yes. We represent clients living in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia in family, inheritance, civil and commercial matters in the state of Nuevo León.

  • Remote handling: most proceedings are resolved by power of attorney and hearings by video call, so in the vast majority of cases you do not need to travel to Mexico.

  • Communication: we coordinate everything by video call and keep you informed at every stage.

  • Languages: our attorneys serve you directly in English and Spanish. For Korean or Chinese-speaking clients, we ensure clear written communication with the support of advanced AI translation tools.

Do I need to travel to Mexico?
In about 95% of cases, no. Hearings are held by video call and you can grant us power of attorney at a Mexican consulate or before a US notary. A few exceptions exist — for example, proceedings that require DNA sample collection or your personal appearance by law. We tell you upfront if your case is one of them.

How much does a divorce in Mexico cost?

Divorces for clients abroad are quoted as an international case, because they involve additional work that a local divorce does not:

  • Requesting the court to hold hearings by video call when they are scheduled in person, and managing your remote participation.

  • Coordinating any certified translations of foreign documents with the translator (translation fees are charged separately by the translator).

  • Communication across time zones and coordination of delivery of the final documents to your address abroad.

An uncontested international divorce with no children or property starts at US$1,000. Cases involving custody, property or service by publication are quoted according to their circumstances. We confirm the full cost — including any third-party fees such as translations or apostilles — before you commit.

How long does a divorce in Mexico take?

  • A mutual-consent divorce is usually completed in under a month.

  • An uncontested divorce usually takes about a month and a half to two months, depending on the court's workload and how quickly the other spouse is served.

  • Disputes over property or children are resolved in separate proceedings that can take 6 to 12 months or longer.

My relative passed away in Mexico — what happens with the inheritance?
Their property in Nuevo León must go through a Mexican probate proceeding:

  • With a will (testate succession): the process is faster and focuses on validating the will and distributing the estate accordingly.

  • Without a will (intestate succession): the law determines the legal heirs (spouse, children, parents) and kinship must be proven with civil registry records.

  • In both cases the process includes appointing an executor, inventorying the estate and transferring the property to the heirs. We represent heirs living abroad throughout the process.

Can you correct an error in my Mexican birth certificate?
Yes, if the certificate was issued in Nuevo León. Misspelled names, wrong dates or mismatched data are corrected through a court proceeding that takes approximately two months, handled entirely by power of attorney and video calls. We also obtain the apostille so the corrected certificate is valid in the US. This is one of the services we most often provide to Mexicans living in the United States.

How do I pay from abroad?
We accept international wire transfers and other common payment methods for clients in the US, Canada and Europe. We quote in US dollars for international cases and confirm the full cost before you commit.

Timelines and outcomes depend on the circumstances of each case.
